Sangaon, IL – Several Studies reveal that Exercise Improved Brain Function in Kids.
Several recent studies in the Netherlands and in Illinois conclude that even small amounts of aerobic exercise improve test results, even in children who were not otherwise very fit. During one study of 9 and 10 year old children, as little as 20 minutes of walking on a treadmill prior to a test improved scores. Additionally, scientists see a significant correlation between physical activity and improved blood flow to the brain with stronger and more active “intricate thinking” areas of the brain – the basil ganglia and hippocampus regions, as see through MRI tests on youngsters ages 6 – 18. A year long Swedish study of one thousand 18 year old males reported a higher IQ rate among fitter individuals, even identical twins, noting that aerobic fitness, not muscle strength produces important proteins and growth factors that stimulate the brain.
Finally, another study concluded that playing virtual sports games on a video player did not produce the same improved cognitive improvements as kids ACTUALLY being physically active.
Keeping kids active is not only important physically but has a positive cognitive impact too.
